March 9, 2013 – almost midnight.
No one plays guitar like Ray Benson, or the fiddle like Jason! The entire band – no words can share how great their music was tonight!. Asleep at the Wheel, from Austin, Texas has been around 37 years, and listening tonight to the music from Bob Wills, Willie Nelson and songs written by Cindy Walker brought back pure enjoyment and a desire to hear more Western Swing music here in Georgia (or to head back more frequently to Texas).
So what’s a Backpack Journalist doing hanging out at a “Western Swing – C &W” concert.
Let’s see – we offer song writing and to date, lyrics written by at risk and military youth, have been put to song. Usually it’s been a rap beat or a jazzy beat.
Tonight, we listened to “Blue Lights”, “What a wonderful world”, “Texas Play Boys”, “San Antonio Rose”, “Route 66” and well, let’s see the evening started out with “Don’t Fence Me in!”. Seems like we need to add a focus on Western Swing that will go hand in hand with our module on Cowboy Poetry!
We can thank Ray Benson for his masterful guitar playing and Jason on the fiddle and Elizabeth for her duet, and in general – all of the band! Inspiration for us all!
